When I first moved to Germany seven years ago, I was excited about the new challenges and opportunities that lay ahead. As someone who had extensive experience in the Melbourne business world as a project and operations manager, I was confident that my skills would translate well in this new environment.

However, I quickly realized that my lack of fluency in German was going to be a major challenge. Despite taking traditional language lessons, I found myself struggling to communicate effectively with my clients and non-English speaking friends. It was frustrating to not be able to express myself as clearly and confidently as I was used to.

This language barrier had a significant impact on my ability to work and be a successful entrepreneur. I struggled to build deep relationships with clients, and felt like I was missing out on important information and opportunities because of my limited language skills. It was difficult to fully participate in meetings and negotiations, and I often felt like I was on the sidelines rather than fully engaged in the process.

Over time, I realised that I needed to develop a new approach to learning the language if I wanted to succeed in this new environment. I learned to prioritise the language skills that were most relevant to my work, and focused on building my confidence and fluency in those areas. This approach allowed me to overcome the pain points of language barriers, and to succeed as a business person in Germany despite the challenges I faced.
